Women's Institute, (WI). Local organization
in country districts in the UK for the
development of community welfare and the
practice of rural crafts. The first such
institute was founded 1897 at Stoney Creek,
Ontario, Canada, under the presidency of
Adelaide Hoodless; the National Federation of
Women's Institutes in the UK was founded
1915. The National Union of Townswomen's
Guilds, founded 1929, is the urban
equivalent. The WI is not associated with any
religious faith or political party.
